2019 Summer Subscription Boxes

Welcome back to the blog!

Today, we’re talking subscription boxes. I’m not an annual subscriber to any, but sometimes it can be fun to gift yourself a box full of surprises. However, I’ve found it can be overwhelming to choose just one. Some are hits, some are misses, and some make you feel guilty for buying a box of stuff you just didn’t end up loving.

I decided to order the summer editions of my two favourite boxes – the Simply Beautiful Box by BCLiving (this one is made here in my home province of British Columbia), and the FabFitFun Box (who hasn’t heard of this one?), to unbox for you, so you can get an idea of what to expect from each of these companies. I’ve ordered from them both before, and I thought it would be interesting to showcase them together. They each have their own definitive style, and I feel this could be helpful if you can’t decide on which one to order.

Let’s get right to it!

Here are the boxes. Both have cute, summery prints, and make you want to tear right into them! Let’s go over pricing, ordering, and shipping.

Retro, almost nostalgic print on Simply Beautiful’s box. I love the vintage vibe!

The box comes with its own magazine, and a thank you note.

I was immediately excited by the Blush Peony metal wine tumbler, as I’d been wanting one for awhile. I’ve used it a few times since opening the box, and I’m amazed at how long it stays cold!

Overall, I am 100% here for the blush/rose gold/grey colour scheme of this box. It’s so on trend it hurts. Let’s take a look at the individual products! All Canadian brands, which makes me happy.

This Blush Peony beach towel is a home run for me – I’ve been eyeing Turkish style towels all summer, but hadn’t bought one yet. Now I don’t have to!

It’s a very generous size – for reference, my bed is a queen.

AG Hair Care‘s Sea Spray is so attractive. I really like the print on the bottle. However, I’ve tried sea sprays before, and my hair is just too heavy to achieve that surfer look. This product I will be handing off to my friend Sara (who can definitely rock a surfer look), to enjoy.

I tried Haven Living’s Apothecary Hand + Foot Polish on my hooves the same day I unboxed this, and I immediately noticed a difference in the texture of my feet. This is a company I would order from again in the future! Desja of Haven Living also has a really lovely, down to earth Instagram page, which made me admire how much Simply Beautiful supports women in small business.

The rose gold straws were a Simply Beautiful original from the Winter 2018 box. I used the add-on feature to add them to my box.

Maylie Jewellery’s gold earrings are a bit of a departure for me, as I’m partial to oversized, sparkly studs. However, they are very pretty, and very grown up, which I dig. I am already dreaming up an outfit to wear them with this fall (white turtleneck and camel boots anyone?).

I struggle with flaky, dry skin on my forehead and nose in the winter, and have the hardest time finding products to get rid of it. I was very pleased to see this BKIND cleansing sponge in the box – I think this will work wonders for me come November!

I just turned 30 this year, and I’m tellin’ ya – I can feel (and SEE!) it in my body. I’ve had to start using different creams for day and night, watch what I eat much more carefully, start a vitamin regime, and go to bed earlier and earlier. When I saw Consonant’s eye cream in the box, I was thrilled! Eye creams are expensive fam!

Here’s our last item for Simply Beautiful, and it’s a fun one – Evalina Beauty’s lip kit is so vibrant and saturated! I haven’t tried it yet, but next date night I certainly will.

Overall impression: Loved the pink, feminine, dainty vibe of this box. Totally my style.

Favourite item: Blush Peony Wine Tumbler

It’s time to unbox FabFitFun! The print on this box is so modern and Hawaiian. I’m a sucker for anything turquoise, and anything palm printed, so this box is very appealing to me.

Right away, I was surprised to see how many bottled products there were. They were full-sized bottles though, which was good. I was excited to see a floral print fabric item, and couldn’t wait to see what it was.

FabFitFun also comes with it’s own magazine, as well as a couple of coupons (one for HelloFresh, and one for money off of a FabFitFun box to gift to a friend).

This box feels very trendy, and I feel would appeal to a wide range of tastes. It has a little bit of everything in it. I couldn’t tell if there was a theme or a colour scheme, but I was looking forward to investigating each item.

Letter boards are still hot, hot hot – however this blogger already has two that she’s usually too lazy to use. Not to worry, this xo, Sienna board will be moving to Vancouver this fall with my sister, Danielle to spruce up her new digs!

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a clothing item in this box! The Spiritual Gangster Kimono is a fabulous item, I can’t wait to wear it.

This was the first time I’ve gotten to try coil hair elastics, and I was happy to try the ‘original’ Invisibobble. The colours were suited to my personal preference as well. Unfortunately, such is my life, my hair was too heavy for them. Danielle was happy to have them though, and has been wearing them daily.

Here’s where the ‘Fit’ comes in – I was instantly intrigued by the flashy box the Burn 60 Resistance Bands came in.

I can’t wait to try these out in the gym! Resistance bands are a new one for me, and I’ve been very bored working out lately. Hopefully these will kickstart my butt into gear!

I was dismayed to see one of the boxes was stained (indicating leakage), and even more dismayed when I saw it was a rose facial spray – I LOVE face/body sprays and was concerned mine might have spilled.

Luckily, it appears the grace & stella spray was still nearly full! I can’t wait to try it!

I really enjoy Living proof. products, but never buy them for myself. I was initially put off by the strong, somewhat masculine/medicinal scent of this hair cream. However, after using it on braided hair before bed, and waking up to smooth, glossy waves – I was reformed! Living proof. really is everything they say it is.

“Hi, my name is Jamie, and I am a clay face mask addict.” Seeing Generation Clay’s mask in the box was like seeing an old friend – my oily, combination skin adores mud masks. Danielle and I both used the mask the same night I unboxed it, and both very much liked it! It’s lighter than a typical clay mask, and smelled nice. It was also bright lavender instead of grey-green, so that was a bonus. I would buy it again if I saw it in a store.

I haven’t tried Whish’s Foot Mask yet, but I intend to after a beach day soon! I was very happy to see that it’s Leaping Bunny Certified. It made me more aware that I need to be checking every single beauty product I bring into my house to make sure it’s cruelty free.

And here’s our last FabFitFun product! I wanted to use Intelligent Nutrients Refining Polish right away, but I’m currently getting over an breakout of epic proportions (that’s right kids, even 30 year olds still get acne), and didn’t want to exacerbate it. But mark my words, as soon as it’s over, I will be all over this product!

Overall impression: This box felt very in the ‘now’, which I liked. If I could change one thing, I would have liked more reusable items in the box, and less bottled products. But, Tristan is going to Toronto for work next week, so I think a sister spa night trying some new things will be fun too.

Favourite Item: Spiritual Gangster Kimono

Two very lovely boxes for the summer season! I’m hard pressed to choose a favourite, but I know you guys are really curious to know… sooo I would have to say I liked the Simply Beautiful Box the most this season! Even though it was the more costly of the two, the wine tumbler and beach towel won me over right out of the gate. And you guys know I have a weakness for all things pink and rose gold! But, I think I may have to order both again for the fall season, just to be sure… for science, guys!

What did you think of these boxes? Did you have a favourite? I’d love to hear from you!
